Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Hook bolt deadlocks are used on aluminum sliding narrow stile storefront doors to maximize lock strength and security. These locks have keys on both sides to allow for greater flexibility.

The main difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that cylinder locks can only be opened with keys of a particular type. The pins are fixed by springs and pins of different sizes. When the correct key is inserted and the pins align themselves, and allow the cylinder to turn. This enables the latch bolt to retract, and the door can be opened.
When the wrong key is used in the wrong way, the pins don't align properly, and they prevent the cylinder from moving. This is why it's crucial to use only the right key when you have to enter your home or office.
The cylinder is located inside the body of the door and is connected to the operating trim using either a half-round or square extension. The cylinder also has small notches on its sides that are designed to align with key notches once the correct key is placed. Once the cylinder has been moved and the latch bolt is inserted, it will follow.
A strike plate is a metal plate that attaches to the door frame and is able to catch the latch bolt that is projected from the lock. The strike plate is generally constructed of steel that is it is secured to the door frame using screws. It also has an opening for the latch bolt to engage into.

Certain keyless locks could require special door modifications or preparations.

These locks are more robust and can be opened through fingerprint, code or facial recognition. Certain smart locks come with the ability to detect tampering, and detect if a door was opened using a key that is not authorized or force.
